The most expensive chocolate is the worst

Stiftung Warentest has tested milk chocolate. More than half of the products are good. Ironically, the most expensive table in the test is the worst.

Chocolates that cost more than three euros per 100-gram table are not necessarily better than those for around one euro. This is the result of a recent test by Stiftung Warentest ("test", issue 12/2018). Good chocolate is also available for less money. A total of 25 chocolate bars took a closer look at the foundation.

Stiftung Warentest: This is how chocolate cuts off
15 of them rated her as "good". Nine panels received a "satisfactory". A chocolate was only "sufficient".

To the test, winner belong
  • "The good chocolate" (1 Euro / 100 g),
  • "Marabou Mjölk Cjhoklad" (1.12 Euro / 100 g) as well
  • "Milka Alpine Milk" (1 Euro / 100 g).
The most expensive chocolate in the test is loaded with nickel
For a long time, traces of mineral oil were a problem with chocolates. Now testify the product testers that the manufacturers have the problem now "under control". No chocolate is significantly contaminated with pesticides or the pollutant cadmium.

Instead, the lab in a chocolate but noted a heavy load with nickel. According to the magazine, this is not harmful to moderate consumption. Nevertheless, Godiva's "Milk Chocolate" was just "sufficient", putting it in the bottom of the test. With 6.95 euros per 100 grams, the chocolate is the most expensive in the test.

Chocolate tastes convinced the testers - almost always
In the taste, almost all chocolates convinced. A good chocolate should have a clear cocoa note, be creamy in the taste and smell of caramel. If the panels are then still free of air bubbles, have a smooth surface and do not splinter at the broken edges, they scored in the Stiftung Warentest the sensory judgment. The vast majority of chocolates (21 out of 25) were rated "good" or "very good" by the testers in the "Sensory Judgment" test category.

A chocolate was negative at the tasting: the organic chocolate "Edel Vollmilch" from Vivani (overall rating "satisfactory") tastes herbal - which is not very suitable for a chocolate.

The testers also criticize the image of a vanilla pod on the packaging of some chocolates. This is misleading in the present cases since only the flavoring agent vanillin is used for the chocolate, in other cases, only traces of vanilla pods or extracts are in it.
